PIDC keen on promoting dental tourism
PENANG International Dental College (PIDC) is keen on venturing into dental tourism to help further boost the state’s popular medical tourism industry.
PIDC chief executive officer and managing director Dr S. Sharavanan said the college had necessary expertise in the field through its parent institution, the Vinayaka Mission’s University (VMU) in India.
“We have plans to start a separate private dental clinic facility to promote medical tourism. We will allocate space for this purpose and obtain necessary approval from the Health Ministry,” he said.
Dr Sharavanan said the college was in the process of inviting officials from the mi-nistry to conduct necessary inspection at its satellite centre in NB Tower I, Butterworth.
The college would initially target patients from Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam, he added.
PIDC academic co-ordinator Dr J. Sabarinathan said the college presently had a dental implantologist, who was trained at the American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID).
“Dental tourism mainly encompasses implants, root canal, surgical and aesthetic dentistry cases. We hope to start our dental tourism unit by early 2009,” he said.
Dr Sabarinathan noted that VMU has a dedicated hospital that conducted medical tourism, drawing patients from all over the world.
