Medical and Health tourism industry witnessed enormous success in recent years. Medical tourism destinations investing billion of dollars to improve healthcare infrastructure and quality. We all know that most of the medical tourists are coming from the western developed countries to Asian countries like India, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia. And these countries are less developed as compared to Europe and America.
But the decisive factor is the healthcare cost that is very high in Europe and America as compared to the above mentioned countries in Asia. That is the reason why Europeans and Uninsured Americans are turning to these countries for their medical treatments. The improved healthcare sector of these countries undoubtedly providing best medical facilities to these medical tourists. Obviously that should be the case if Medical Tourism industry and ratio of Medical Tourists is growing everyday.
But the matter of discussion today is healthcare cost and infrastructure of these Medical Tourism Hubs for locals. Is the investment in Medical Tourism Sector improving the quality of healthcare with cost effective treatments for locals? The answer is Complicated.
India is going to become the Hub of Medical Tourism in Asia. Even Obama is concerned with the growing ratio of American patients turning to India for cheap healthcare. India is going to invest billions in its healthcare sector in coming years. Infrastructure of Health IT is improving, Private sector hospitals are coming with improved medical devices and techniques. But three sisters committed suicide in Gujarat (India) all three were going through from HIV. Their mother also infected from AIDS virus. But no suitable cure they have got since their childhood. Her mother according to the reports acquired the virus in blood transfusion during delivery. According to a report over 70,000 children are infected with HIV in India. Will all of them commit suicide? It means public healthcare is not getting as better as it should be in quality and accessibility. India and other Asian healthcare sectors are facing challenges of Heart ailments and other chronic diseases.
Uninsured American have money to travel abroad for medical treatment it is affordable for them but three sisters of Gujarat(India) committed suicide did not have the resources to get even medicine . Like Obama I do not have any intention to discourage the trend to travel India for cheap healthcare. But I really want every medical tourism destination should maintain affordable healthcare for its natives also. Private sector hospitals of medical tourism destinations are providing affordable healthcare to overseas patient but is it affordable for a poor national of these countries to get treatment from these hospitals? And the answer is not, the healthcare that is cheap and affordable for overseas patients in private sector hospitals. same kind of quality treatment is expensive for locals. Healthcare providers should take proper steps for local as well to make it affordable healthcare for all. Affordable healthcare should not be only for Medical Tourists equal opportunities for affordable healthcare should be given to the local healthcare sectors of Medical Tourism destinations.
